Introduction

In 2007, I published my Blend Phonics Reader. It was designed as a supplement Hazel Loring's 1980 Reading Made Easy with Blend Phonics for First Grade. I teach phonics and directional guidance with Loring's method in my classroom from the chalkboard and then assign the corresponding Units in the Blend Phonics Reader for the students to read for homework. I have also used my Blend Phonics Reader as a stand-alone beginning and remedial reading tool. It has proven very effective. I have gotten three year grade level improvement in as little as four hours of private tutoring. The improvement on my whole-word dyslexia test, the Miller Word Identification Assessment (MWIA) is equally impressive.

The Blend Phonics Reader: Cursive Edition provides a a systematic way to teach children to read and write cursive using a comprehensive phonics approach. I have found cursive handwriting to be a powerful tool for preventing and curing whole-word dyslexia. I would like to express my thanks to all my reading students at the Odessa Christian School and my private tutoring students in Ector and Midland County, TX for helping me to perfect these materials and helping me to demonstrate their effectiveness. Recently a sixth grade student read through the Blend Phonics Curisve with me. He improved from indpendent third grade to indpendent sixth The MWIA Level 2 demonstarted that he was cured of his whole-word dysleixa. This is typical of the scores obtained with this carefully crafted sequential phonics method.
